OL addiction

As I am officially an OL now, I am getting addicted to heels and bags.
These are the two most important items if you want to make a difference in your relatively boring office look. :)

Heels have the amazing power of demonstrating both your corporate strength and feminine side, while carrying a good bag is like showcasing your taste, attracting the envious looks of other females.
We, women, are crazy creatures - yes that's the universal truth.

Long story short - my recent favorites:

Heels from Charles and Keith - affordable taste!!
I bought two pairs of them within two weeks. Yes I am now burried in guilt, without complaints though. :p

My next target:

Gucci latest collection:

Forever Superstar Shopper Bag
by Fendi

:)

Sunsweet prunes - keep the doctors away!

As I was gobbling down every Malaysian food I can find since I came back, I have literally got myself into deep shit.

Qian's food equation:
Asam Laksa + Curry Laksa + Pan Mee + Seafood + Tomyam = constipation.
*shy*
I prefer to phrase it as...ahem.. irritated bowel.

So I went to the doctor that day.
And to my surprise, for one single sickness, she actually prescribed me five types of medicine.
One for 'angin' (direct translation: wind), one for 'sakit perut (stomach pain), one for 'fibre', and one for 'digestion'.
As for last one which looked exactly like charcoal, I forgot what was it for.

I instantly felt like I am one of those old ladies who is having a full package of elderly sicknesses - heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Consultation and medication cost: RM50++
*ching ching - $ sound*

I have to admit that the yellow and orange tablets were pretty effective.
In fact, TOO effective.
I had to rush to the toilet after every meal.
But once I stopped the medication, the same problem occurred again.

So I felt like a bloated pregnant woman for almost a week.
The difference is instead of a baby, I was carrying a stomach full of ....

Giving up on the idea of seeking for more medication, I decided to head to Jusco for some Sunsweet prunes.
I ate 6 of them.
And just like what you expect - everything is back to normal again.

I feel so light that I think I can fly!!

One can of sunsweet prunes: RM8.90.
You can even have some extra prunes for more Malaysian food.

:)

Quote of the day: why see dr. when you have sunsweet prunes?
Management of sunsweet prunes, if you are searching for a spokesperson...
ME! ME! ME! *eagerly waving my hand*

Title

Figures figures figures.
I am taking ages to process this whole stack of figures in front of me.
Wish that I was aware of the importance of mathematics during my school days.

But perasanly speaking, I think I am quite good at processing information and digging out the insights from any given resources.

So gambate Qian.

On a side note, I am applying for jobs in UK branding consultancy firms.
After working in my dad's company, I believe that some international exposure would do me some good.
But I was just thinking about the title of my current job.

Research consultant? Sounds like I make it up myself.
Consultant? A bit exaggerating.
Boss's daughter? Too honest.
So I ended up with 'researcher'.
And I am looking like a bespectacled nerd now.

Xuan Music Cafe

Queenie brought me to this hidden gem yesterday night - Xuan Music Cafe at Kuchai Lama.
I have always been longing to find a place to relax at night, with some live mandarin music and a quiet environment, a place where you can rejuvenate your body after a whole day of work and reorganise your thoughts.

And I found it last night.
Thanks to my queen.

Guess what? One of the singers is actually a friend of Quin Er. What a coincidence!

If you feel stressed and moody at night, and you are tired of the packed Kopitiams and PapaRich, or afraid of the heat of Malaysia and its hawker stalls - why not walk into Xuan Music Cafe?

Something very Msian Chinese, and I like it~

Back home in Msia

I have been really productive since I came back to Malaysia.
But unlike the past few summers, I am not engaged in tonnes of gatherings and reunions.
Instead, I work!

Well, of course for the first week, I went out with a couple of close friends.
Celebrated Tzuch's birthday was the highlight of the week.
We went for karaoke and popped the party poppers indoor.
I bet the staffs from Redbox cursed us badly that day for messing up the room.
Anywayz, we had fun and that's more important!

From the second week onwards, I started work in dad's office.
Lol. There are still advantages for being the boss's daughter.
For instance, you have no choice but to follow your 'boss's' car to work, and that means, you do not need to be THAT punctual.
And you have to accompany your 'boss' for lunches, and I am here to tell you, there are indeed free lunches in the world.

However, I did my part as well.
Proud to say that I am currently working in the R&D department, which consists of....me and... myself!
LOL. Small small bisnes saja~

Went to Singapore last weekend for shopping spree!!
Ooops nope. That's not the main purpose.
I was there to attend my cousin's wedding. It was a very touching wedding.
But still, in terms of proportion, the trip was mainly about shopping!
What shall I say? Women's nature!
And when four girls plus one woman go on a trip - you simply can't help it!

Tzuch fell sick this week.
Maybe because he missed me too much when I went away to Singapore.
Just joking.
I hope it's not swine flu though.

Pray hard for his interview.
And hopefully he will get a job very soon.
I believe he would.
For the mean time - REST LA!
You had been working all summer, it's not wrong to just stop for a while MR. WORKAHOLIC!

That's all for now!

Danny

Homerton College

My favourite bus stop outside Homerton :)

What's next

There is always, always, always someone telling me what to do.
The pro of it is that you always know what to do.
The con of it being you never know what you really want to do.

And the first decision I ever made myself was to change from Law to Management Studies.

But now what?
Now what?

A lawyer always know what he or she will be doing next.
The route is laying right in front of their eyes - Bar or LPC, internships, graduate programmes so on and so forth.

But I am graduating with Management Studies.
What am I going to do next?
What's next?

No time for good byes

I've just handed in my final report.
My academic life in Cambridge has officially ended today.

Maybe because of the piling up of daily chores like graduation trip planning, packing, job hunting, photo shootings, friends' gatherings, I have no time for goodbye sadness yet.

Though I am pretty sure it's bottling up, but let's just leave it for now.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Life without a laptop is healthy

Life without a laptop is healthy.
Don't believe?

Let me give you a brief description of my day:

I work in the library every morning, without watching a single online video because I refuse to bring my headphone along.
After a whole morning of hard work, I head out for meetings in the afternoon with my teammates.
Then to reward myself for a such a productive day, I walk around town or rest in my room reading books and magazines instead of YouTube.
At night, I work in the library again.
Finally I end my day with a mask and a nice beauty sleep.

What a healthy, efficient life!
Good job. :)

p.s. YouTube is evil. :p

i thought it's over

i am supposed to be watching series whole day and night, without a slight worry that i am leaving something behind.
i am supposed to be sleeping till 2pm in the afternoon, and still have the luxurious right to eat my breakfast in bed.
i am supposed to be walking around town, enjoying the sunlight, sipping coffee at starbucks and reading novels in borders.

i am supposed to have an after-exam life with no lectures, no deadlines and absolutely no work!!

but no.
i am reading piles of reports.
i am thinking.
about online video, about technology, who are total strangers for a computer idiot like me.
not to mention the cultural differences when it comes to UK TV and UK consumers.
i am sorry, but i know only astro.

i thought if i know something about gossip girl, grey's anatomy, one tree hill, sex and the city, and desperate housewives, i should know online videos.
and i youtube a lot, so i SHOULD know online videos.

apparently that is not the case.
which means work for me again.

so. it's absolutely not over yet.
cambridge is not done with me yet.

Over

Because...

EXAM IS OVER!!!

'Rest in peace'

My kind and cheerful cleaner Grace knows that I am going to have my final paper tomorrow.

So today when I met her at the corridor, she asked me, 'Qian, so are you planning to relax your mind today?'

Relax my mind??!

HAHAHAHA.

NOOOOOOOOO! obviously not.

There are people who finish all the readings one week earlier, and 'internalise' them way before exams, so that they can have a mind rest on the last day.

Sadly, I am not one of them.
Lol.

is this a dream or what

maybe because of the exam stress, i dreamed a lot lately.
and in a very weird way, i dreamed about ordinary daily chores.
like brushing teeth, going to town, receiving mum's phone call, talking to tzuch.

till the point that i am confused about what really happened, and what did not.

did i run out of toothpaste?
did i talk to mum that day?
did i eat chicken for dinner?

to be honest, i am not sure at all.

so if i did promise to do something, and i forgot about it.
forgive me.

i am temporarily shut down for conscious actions.

currently still in my la-la land. hopefully it won't turn out to be a horrible nightmare tomorrow and thursday.

examine examination

someone please tell me that exams are not at all important.

and it's absolutely fine to walk into the exam hall with my mind totally blank.

it's just a tiny little part of our life, and no one cares about it really.

all i need to do is to attend the exams, to write something (anything), and to walk out.

and then i deserve a good rest and a very nice break.

health matters most. happiness matters even more.

who cares about grades?

oh please. please. please.

Time is money...

It's time to get a new watch!!

God. This is getting worse.
My cravings for fashion items have gone from pieces of garments, which are still affordable, to the more luxurious watches.

OK. Do I need a watch?
Immediate response: Yes I do!!!!
Rationalized response: No, I don't need a watch. I have skinny wrists, so watches look ugly on me.
Counter response: Well, it depends. There are watches that are tiny and elegant.
Counter-counter response: Tiny and elegant sound expensive. I REPEAT. I DO NOT NEED A WATCH.

U sure?
Watch this!

** After watching**

Materialistic Devil: OMG! I love the D-light!!! It's just too cool that the numbers are actually appearing on the crystals! I want this!!

Frugal angel: But well. That's is WAY too expensive.

Materialistic Devil: Then take a look at these!!

Frugal Angel: Sigh~~ I have to admit that I actually tried the black Octea once. And it looks perfect on me. But.. but...but...despite it being pretty stylish, it couldn't go with elegant dresses. HA! I've got a point!

Materialistic Devil: That's a very good point indeed. You have to get one which goes well with both elegant dresses and daily clothes. TADA! (kindly sponsored by Tada radio. :p)

OK. I can always be a materialistic angel.

p.s. this post indicates no immediate intention of getting one of those Swarovski watches, though admittedly, there is a slight tendency to do so.

Finally some maths brain cells in my head

Today, I did my first maths paper after three years of not touching a calculator.
Just to make it sound more impressive, I did my first Cambridge maths paper today!
Yes, that's better.

And I think I did pretty well. Hehe.
You couldn't imagine how much effort I had put in just for this paper.
I constantly bugged my supervisor, did all the past years (and did them all over again before exams), read the textbooks, asked the engineers.

I even wrote down notes like:
1. 1 billion - 9 zeros, 1 million - 6 zeros.
2. Draw the diagram with pencil, make it at least half a page.
3. Double check the answers.
...
...
...
20. Look at your calculator while typing in the figures. DUH.

Now you can imagine how nervous I was before my exams.
I couldn't even sleep the night before.

Well that usually happen. Because I never sleep the night before exams.
But this time I made a point to have a full 8-hours sleep so that I can have an effective, and hopefully a mathematically-effective brain during the exams.
Yet still, I couldn't sleep -.-

But it's all worth the effort.
YEAH!
YEAH YEAH!
YEAH YEAH YEAH!

Just one thing.
Because I have put in extreme effort in this paper.
I kind of seriously neglect the other two papers.
And I mean SERIOUSLY, chronically neglect the other two papers.
Now I need to cover four subjects in 6 days.

Wish me luck.
As I need it a lot.

God.
Please grant me photographic memory.
Just for 6 days.

And I don't mind paying.

I dare you to finish this.

1. I am bored with my revision. So I decided to write something.

2. I have no idea what to write yet. Because for the past three weeks (until now), my life is pretty much about studies. Unless you are interested in portfolio analysis, accounting statements, market structure, linear programming.......

3. *yawn* You see. Not interested right? Let me think of something else.

4. Oh yea, I did something sinful today. I watched 'The Confessions of Shopaholic' movie. I am supposed to watch it with Chien Fen. But blame the exams and blame Danny. He tempted me by streaming it right in front of me. When I was presented with a choice of 'economics revision' and 'watch a movie', I followed the devil in my heart. *everyone would right??! not really, esp when exams is 8 days away*

5. So sorry, Chien Fen....but just to make you feel better. I watched the obviously pirated version with shadows of people constantly appearing on the screen. And somehow the conversations do not match their actions. Yes, it is that lousy. Serve me right. Karma.

6. Btw, Becky Bloomwood in that show is exactly like what I imagine she would be. But I prefer Luke Brandon in the book. OOOOooooo Luke Brandon - that successful, smart, rich and handsome (not very sure about this - he MUST be) Luke Brandon. He has some kind of rugged look in the show, maybe because he is playing as an editor in the show rather than an owner of a PR company. I want him clean, not rugged.

7. After this, I am going to finish up the 'Contestable market' bit. And hopefully the past years for regressions.

8. Just for your information, it is 4.41 am in the morning now.

9. Yes I am a last minuter.

10. Yes it serves me right.

11. But no, I am not going to change that.

12. Because I enjoy the pressure.

13. And I enjoy the free time before that.

14. For superstitous reason, I am not going to write anything for this number.

15. Finally, I hope grandma will get well soon. I am very worried about her.

I miss her Lo Ak (teochew braised duck), Teochew Kueh (pink cake with glutinous rice in it), Gulai (curry with coconut milk), Char Qi (Teochew style fried crab), He Mui (fish porridge).

Now I know where my family get that picky tastebuds from.

God. I pray for her good health.

16. Final-finally, I urge for everyone to take care of their health. It is like air, we tend to ignore it when it is of vital importance for us to love and to achieve anything in life.

Tell me about it. It's now 4.56am.

Take a break!

Whoa!! Shuang!
Two of my favorite voices in one song.
I couldn't wish for more.

Fang Da Tong 方大同 and Xiao Jing Teng 萧敬腾 :)

It's so funny that Xiao wore the same specs as Fang.
And the way they said '很棒很棒' after they finished the song.

Coming up next is YOGA!!! and Fang Da Tong.
To my surprise, Ah May was the host!! OMG!
I want to meet Yoga too............and I want him to sing duet with Fang Da Tong in front of me..............

Why am I struggling on these stupid regression equations, wholly beseiged by piles of books and papers??!

Qian,qian.
Now you work very very hard.
Then one day you will be able to own a successful fashion label.
'So that' you can invite artists as your brand spokesmen!!

Umph! Yes mam! what a motivation -.-

So back to work.
8.35am in the morning.
Considering the fact that I haven't slept for the night, this is a really good wake up call!

Back to maths...gosh~~~

How am I going to do finance after this...

May everday be Mayday :)

Yihui, you better make it to Mayday's concert in Australia.
Otherwise, I will not forgive you.

Keke..just joking.

Just that Mayday's concert is d B-E-S-T BEST!!!!
I watched so many of their concerts online.
And if I am going to go for one, I wouldn't know which one to pick at all. Each and every single one is just too good.

So..please go.......

Everytime I think of the fact they knew each other since high school, it reminds me of high school too.
We used to sing lots of Mayday's songs back then in high school. '恋爱-I-N-G, Happy-I-N-G'
Their songs give people courage to stand up from where they fell, make an ordinary person feel special and belonged. They cheer you up, make you high and tell you that despite all bad things happened in life, you are never alone.

This is Mayday! If you start to know them, they are just like a close friend of yours - they understand.

These are some of their concert's clips. Both are not the best part of that concert. I simply love the songs most!

Argghh..
I wish I am a kangaroo now.

Wait.
Kangaroo is forbidden from concerts.

OK. I wish I am Yihui now.

Recently, I love this song very much.

Shout out for Yihui!!!!!

Last night, I was listening to the online Tada Radio Station!!
(by the Chinese Music Group, University of Melbourne)

Because Yihui is one of the DJs!
Her show 叫我DJ!is showing every Friday.

She will be sharing the latest and nicest mandarin songs and news!
I couldn't stop listening to it because the song mix is good, the words are fun and inspiring.

There are many creative sessions like finding out what's wrong with the song or similar songs in the market or the meaning of the newest hitto term used by Japan and Taiwan.

There are many other shows by other DJs as well.
Like news/info session in Cantonese, hit chart for all English, Mandarin and Cantonese songs, a show about travelling in English, and another mandarin session about fashion and love etc.

How to listen to it??

It is simple.
You can either stream it online.
But I find it better to download to my itunes.
You simply need to subscribe - and it's free!!!

For more information: visit http://tada-radio.com/

Why isn't there a Chinese Music Group in Cambridge??! Hmmmm..
Can't wait for next friday!

Why do you dry your chopping board under the sun?

There were lots of things that I didn't understand when I was young.
But now as I grow, I start to get an idea of what's happening.

I used to wonder why my maid dried the wooden chopping board under the sun.
Until today Alison told me that our wooden chopping board is molding.
Then I know why.

I used to wonder why mum bought toothbrushes in bulk. Toothbrush is meant to last for long.
Until I come overseas, and I get to buy my own toothbrushes.
Then I know why.

I used to wonder why my maid kept scolding us for changing our clothes so frequently.
Until I wash my own clothes and taste the trouble of ironing it.
Then I know why.

I used to wonder why my mum was so frustrated when we didn't go down immediately for dinner.
Until I prepare my own dinner and experience nagging people to finish my heartfully-prepared food.
Then I know why.

As teenagers, we tend to think that we know better than adults.
No, we don't and we never will. Most of the times.

Now I finally get the meaning of the chinese idiom frequently used by adults 'young girl, we eat salt more than you eating rice' (even though there can be better description than salt and rice).
Or sayings like 'giving you advice is like putting money in your pocket - you will use it one day.'

Next time if you come across them telling their grandfather stories again.
It's OK if you don't understand.
Just listen.

Mount Everest

When I was on a train back to Cambridge, I overheard someone talking behind me, 'I want to climb the Mount Everest'.

MOUNT EVEREST??!!
Are you joking?? It could kill you...as in not many people can do that..come on...you must be kidding me..

That was my first reaction.

But on second thought, it wasn't that funny after all.
He sounded so certain and determined.
In fact, I am envious of him.

Come to think about it, he has something to work for and to look forward to.
He can shout it out loud and proud even though it sounds crazy to most people.

It is not wrong to dream. As long as you work for it.

Holy Saint

Everyone make mistakes.
Many repeat them.
This is perfectly normal.

I used to think that if someone did something wrong, I owed to him a responsibility to point it out and to correct it.
But pointing it out or correcting it can sometimes go beyond the tolerable limit to become disrespect or even judgmental.

I came by a chance to witness a mistake recently.
I observed.
Then I realised that those who pointed a finger at the wrongdoer are not necessarily angelic and righteous after all.

Some enjoy pointing out mistakes of others to self-assert their nobleness.
Some act out of concern but care more about their own feelings and perceptions instead of the offender's.
Some simply love to gossip about screwed-up people.

Undeniably, among the people who point a finger at the offender, there are some who truly care and intend to make him realise so that he will not repeat again.
However, there are many ways to do that.

The bottom line is to put yourself in the offender's shoes and to understand the fact that people make mistakes, people learn from it and people change.
So instead of focusing solely on how wrong he is, you tell him also the possibility of change and allow a chance for him to do so.
There is really a fine line between 'righteous' and 'judgmental', 'helpful' and 'nosy'.

If we are the victim, we have all the right to be mad.
But mind that it's something between us and the wrongdoer, being wronged doesn't give us any right to spread it out and to make it worse.
Well, of course we can bad-mouth and be revengeful.
The point is - don't play the role of an innocent victim while doing that.

If we are not the victim, we too have the right to gossip, to be unhelpful, to be a total bitch.
But for god's sake - don't act like a saint at the same time.

If we want to be a bitch. Do it in a bitchy way.
Because bitch with an angel outfit is just so wrong.

There is no saint in this world.
If we make not many mistakes so far, it's simply because we are lucky enough not to come across screwed up circumstances, or we are smart enough to avoid them. But being smart and careful doesn't make us holy.

By writing this, it sounds like I am pointing a finger at someone too.
No, to be honest, I have noone in my mind.

Wait, in fact, I have one person in my mind - and it's me.
I make mistakes. Tonnes of them.
So....

Cambridge MNight 2009

This is the Cambrige MNight 2009 Stranger Things Have Happened Here's opening dance.
From what I've heard, it is supposed to express the sense of detachment. :)

Here is the singing performance after intermission, by the 1st years and our beloved and very happening director Kenrick (the lead singer).

Can't wait for the committee to produce the DVD (hope there is one though)
I love the play very very much.

God I am going to miss Mnight.

English

Danny's aunty sent this email across, and I find it interesting.

ONLY THE ENGLISH COULD HAVE INVENTED THIS LANGUAGE

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Then shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
neither apple nor pine in pineapple...
English muffins weren't invented in England .

We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes,
we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,
and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is that writers write but fingers don't fing,
grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends
and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend.

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English
should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same,
while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language
in which your house can burn up as it burns down,
in which you fill in a form by filling it out,
and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop, how come Mother's not Mop?
AND IF PEOPLE FROM POLAND ARE CALLED POLES
THEN PEOPLE FROM HOLLAND SHOULD BE HOLES

AND THE GERMANS, GERMS
(no offence)

Shopaholic

Influenced by my very eng-lit friend Chien Fen, I am determined to read at least a couple of English novels.

So I walked into WHS Smith several weeks ago right before my fashion course.
After picking up some chocolate bars, I quickly browsed through the novel section.
Was very tempted to pick up 'Twilight' since my sisters were pretty crazy about it for quite some time, until 'The Devil Wears Prada' came into my sight.

Wait! That's my book isn't it?
I am attending a fashion course in five minutes time.
I should be reading something related to Prada or Gucci or Dolce & Gabbana.
Not Shakespeare or Michael Crichton (sadly he passed away in a battle against cancer)

So I took a quick look at the back of the book.
'Sassy, insightful and sooo Sex and the City'.

Alright! Sex and the City! That's it!
I walked to the till with a copy of 'The Devil Wears Prada' by Lauren Weisberger.

***

Again, I was standing right in front of WHS Smith at London King Cross yesterday.
Again, I was feeling like a literate - I have to read something while waiting for Danny.

But this time I am going to get something different.
More philosophical perhaps.

So I went straight to the top-selling chart.
These books should be good.
If not, they are at least popular.

Fiction? Nope.
Twilight...AGAIN?
Few weeks have passed, and it's still on the rack??!
One very cynical thought suddenly crept up on me - do they actually update their charts?

I think they do.
They should.

OK. Let's see.
Many eye-catching yellow labels sticking on the books, so yellow as if they are going to pop out any second - 'Buy one and get another at 1/2 price.'

This is one thing I like about England.
The musuems are free. The papers are free. Correction - some papers are free.
And now even the novels are on promotion.
How can it not be a civilised nation??!

OKOK.
About the 1/2 price thingy - it has nothing to do with civilization. I guess it's just one of the after effects of the economic crisis.
Hehe..but who cares?

Then I glanced through the titles, which I was supposed to do at the first place.

'Confessions of a Shopaholic'
. OK no more 'fashion literature'.
Next.

'Shopaholic Ties the Knot'. What? Again?
Next.

'Shopaholic and Sister'.

Fine.....
This author must be really good, and rich of course. (provided that the chart is truthful though)
It is even made into a movie - it must be good then.
But I guess mostly because a part of me (I have to admit - a very big part of me) is very interested in this interesting shopaholic series of novels.

So here comes the very predictable ending - I bought two of the series.
And I finished one of them yesterday.
And IT'S SO GOOD.

I experienced most of the things she said - like got tricked into Spring bags and all sorts of promotional strategies. And all those excuses you came out to feel less guilty about buying something totally unnecessary.

***

Well I guess we should somehow get inspired after reading a novel.

So here you go - my inspirations:

First. I should go get the other books in the series.

I thought it should be inspirational??

Well, I've to say it's good market positioning. For very obvious reasons - targetting on shopaholics is always the right thing to do. And it's absolutely brilliant to write an entire series on it. Because shopaholics will ALWAYS come back for the next season. :)

- Right, I guess this is one good inspiration. -

Second. I am a shopaholic afterall.

- Sincere confession and realisation - very inspirational! -

Third. One great thing about being a shopaholic - I AM NOT AT ALL ALONE! :)

- Very very inspirational. keke. -

So what are you waiting for? Another thing on your shopping list:
Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIN!!

To my always pretty and smart sister Wan Jin,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Unbelievable! She is now sixteen years old!
I can still remember her being that small little girl, who used to check every night if our house doors were locked; and that chi-cha-po who started talking at a relatively young age. ;)

But now she has grown into a beautiful young lady.

Wish you:
1. Score flying colours in your exams!!!
2. Enjoy your time in Young Enterprise and whatever commitments you are having!!
3. Stay happy, young, beautiful as always!!!

Wish you all the best my dear sister! Have a great year ahead!

Whenever I listen to this song, I cannot help but cry.

Dr. M's visit

Tun Mahathir visited Cambridge today.
I have to admit that he is a very good politician and a man with charisma.

10 Recent Addictions

Recently I have developed some 'weird' addictions. Don't ask me why and how I caught up with them - because I have absolutely no idea..-.-

1. I enjoy staying up alone at night, sometimes even until 6am in the morning. Do nothing but to listen to different songs and to indulge in my own thoughts. Weird but I find songs nicer to hear when it is quiet at night.

2. I love to shop after lectures and during weird times like 5pm when the shops are about to close (those are times with least customers). After a long, stressful day, nothing beats a good evening retail therapy. :)

3. I youtube A LOT. It's like the hottest link in my browser now. I watch random series from U.S, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan or even China (yes China..I have just finished Justice Pao recently keke). But most of all, I love the Taiwanese entertainment and variety shows. I used to perceive them as 'shallow'. But I was SO WRONG - the hosts are simply hilarious.

4. I constantly check my email, almost every half an hour. It's like one weird habit I cannot help but to do it again and again. Am I nuts? Pretty much.

5. It is a must for me to check out the kitchen section whenever I walk into a departmental store. I even collect catalogues from Lakeland (retain chains selling household items). I guess pots and pans really help when it comes to fantasies for a warm, cozy home.

6. I read fashion magazines before sleep. But the thing is I always fall asleep even before I finish one damn article. Don't ask me why.

7. I love clementines/mandarin oranges. And now it seems like I am having a permanent sorethroat.

8. I read scripts of series online. Yes, no motion pictures, no sound effects, just the scripts. I find it the easiest way to learn English, especially in terms of daily conversations. This is the best excuse I can come out with so far.

9. I shop online nowadays. Albums, books or fashion items - just a few clicks and it will be right in your pigeon hole after a week. I am now very close to buying my groceries online.

10. Finally I drink Kopi O at night. Hmm..maybe that explains the staying up late bit. And it has to be that very specific brand - NanYang Kopi O from white coffee beans. YUM.

I couldn't help but to wonder: is England this bad that I have to come up with these obsessions just to ease out the boredom??!

Gor Gor Leslie Cheung

Was watching Leslie Cheung's videos online.

He forever will be the one artist I respect most.

Came across this song by Leslie Cheung and other artists from Universal.
Got Wong Yew Meng as well!!! :)

p.s. I added one of my favorite songs by him in the playlist - 今生今世

Vanity

'Vanity is the healthiest thing in life', said Karl Lagerfield.

Arguable. But pretty true.

In my wildest dreams

1. I wish to publish a book.

Mainly photographs. About some unsung heroes in our lives.

They are not scientists who make great discoveries. They are not leaders of nations who tell people what to do. They are absolutely normal people, like you, like me; like a mother of four who raised her children well; like a grandfather who sacrificed his pension for kids' education fee; like a poor African child who managed to graduate from a local university.

Mainly because they accomplish the impossible in their lives. Even though the impossible, from many point of view, is not extraordinary. But to me, they are successful, in every way.

2. I wish to go for a very spontaneous trip.

Not knowing where am I going, not planning itinerary.

I think it would be fun to just go somewhere. No plans. No destination. It's like living life. You never know what will happen, where you will end up at. So why care so much about it? Experience every single moment. Make fun out of everything. Enjoy the process.

Because it really doesn't matter how many continents you have been to. Because travelling is never about 'conquering' the well-known destinations, or hitting some sort of target.

Just like life. It is not about achieving what people usually think you should achieve.
Go Paris - visit Eiffel Tower. Go New York - visit Statue of Liberty. Isn't that boring?

I remember most about the night when I stood at the balcony of the Empire State Building.
Not because of the silly, self-fulling thought of 'you see, I've been to New York'.
It's simply because I enjoy every single bit of it. The night view, the sky without stars and the cold wind.

To dream anything you want to dream. That is the beauty of human mind.
To do anything you want to do. That is the strength of human will.
To trust yourself and to test your limit. That is the courage to succeed.

Pure

On Valentine's Day, I asked Danny.
'Can you describe me in one word?'.

He thought for a while and came out with a rather surprising word 'pure'.

Yucks. OK. You all can stop vomitting now.
I know how people feel when someone starts to brag about herself being 'pure'.
But this is my blog - so who cares?
HAHAHA.

Bear with me. Just one more sentence.
His explained (I admit there is some paraphrasing here, but the general idea is there): 'Your love is pure and real. You get worried, you get mad, you care because you love. When you come to love, it's pure love.'

I have to say - I am impressed.
He actually knows me quite well. :p

Ok. Full stop.

The real story starts here.
He asked me, 'then what would you describe me in one word?'

After some thinking, I replied with a wide grin on my face.
'Pure.'

Hehe. I am serious k?

He is one person I know who has no bad intentions.
He has an amazing ability to never see the bad side in people.
I know him for three years and I never see him badmouth, or backstab, or deceive, or play dirty.
He never judge, never try to intrude the lives of others, never try to take the credits.
Never. Not even once.

He is just there, smiling, and be responsible for his own life.

His honesty is very funny when everytime he tries to lie, you can really tell.
And he never pretend, never try to put a mask on his face to be that someone else.
He just has that courage to reveal his true self in front of everybody.
Amazing isn't it?

He talks about his mistakes and his 'evil' plans (and it ceases to be evil when he openly talks about it).
He smiles and responds so naturally to everything.

I always call him 'mr. big kid'.
Because of his unstoppable curiosity in most things, even after many times of almost falling off the bike whenever he tries to do a stunt on it.
Because of his absolute confidence in being himself and his wonderful magic of rejecting pretense.

Mostly because of his innonence (sometimes it can be very 'noob' though, but what to do? :).
Pure innonence even after going through so many tough times in life.

Perhaps this is what got him through cancer.
- his untainted heart.

Pure. What a word. :)

Yes

I used to be that person who always say 'yes' to everything.

But it got tiring in the end because I said 'yes' ALL THE TIME, even if I didn't want to.
And it got worse when I wasn't sure of what I really want anymore.
Often, you realised too, that people tend to take advantage on your inability to say 'no'.

Then I pushed myself into that 'no' era.
I said 'no' to things I wasn't up to.
And then I said 'no' to things I wasn't sure of.
And then I said 'no' to most things in life.

It became a habit.
I stopped to get involved or to commit.

Maybe because I perceived most people as trying to get something out of me.
Maybe because after a lot of resting, I resorted to life without much responsibilities and it was pretty difficult to walk out of that comfort zone.
Maybe because I was not engaged in things for quite a while and I was not sure if I am enough for anything anymore.

Today, I watched the show 'Yes Man'.

Funny. I see myself in that show. But the opposite version of it.

It reminded me of something I long forgotten.

Yes. Say yes.

'Yes' embraces possibilities.
'Yes' opens up doors.
You never know what's waiting for you if you don't step in and try.

Yes, it might turn out to be a really bad thing, but you learn and you experience.
Yes, it might be something very different from what you expect, but what's wrong with surprises?
Yes, it might be tiring, but at the very least, you open up your eyes and stretch out your arms and taste what's in life.

Don't restrict yourself. Don't close up the doors. Don't cut your wings off if you want to fly.

Yes.
But the trick is say yes only if you want to.

Not too sure?
Try it out then.

:)

p.s. I recalled back all the 'yes-es' I said previously. Somehow they turned out to be something good. I remembered last year I said 'yes' to help out with Malaysian Night when I was so busy (and I really wanted to say 'no'). And guess what? This year when I couldn't get my tickets, I got them as a favour in return for my 'yes'.

Trust me. It does lead to something good.
It really depends on how you define 'good' though. :p

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaming 'wow! what a ride!'.

I used to write this in my personal statement.
I guess I had a short-term memory lost. hehe.
But gratefully, it's all coming back again.

Slumdog Millionaire

Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from a slum of Mumbai, is one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India's version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'

The question is 'How did Jamal do it?'

A. He cheated.
B. He was lucky.
C. He's a genius.
D. It is written.

The movie opens with this question.

***

'Slumdog Millionaire' by Danny Boyle is so far one of the best movies I've watched in my life.

Every once in a while, a seemingly ordinary film, with no famous cast and flying heroes, enters the theatre and takes the audiences by surprise.

'Slumdog Millionaire' makes me fall in love with movies all over again.

***

The plot is simply stunning.

It's about a story of a young man on India's version of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'. It starts off with the police interrogating him for cheating in the show.

But soon the inspector and the audiences realise that he knew the answers for a reason.

Like the opening question to the movie, the four things - knowledge, tricks, luck and fate - which one is the answer to all the things happened in life?

It is a love story. But also a revelation of oppression, prejudices and economic exploitation in India, a hardcore brotherhood movie and a life examination.

To top it all, it has a nail-biting storyline that 'climaxes' till the very end - will he win the 20 million rupees?

Find it hard to believe?

Let's see the reviews:

* It's a Dickensian picture about a world rarely, if ever, seen in mainstream movies, a film that grabs us from the opening frame and doesn't let go until the credits roll at the end.

*
It is drama, comedy, musical, thriller, love story, and more in one transcending, riveting story. It is life on celluloid and, easily, one of the best movies of the year.

* What Boyle has done is truly miraculous. He has turned a film about street life in Bombay into a visceral, genuine crowd-pleaser. And you will walk out of the movie theater feeling inspired and hopeful, knowing you've just seen something very special.

* "Slumdog Millionaire" is not to be missed. It is the best movie of the year. And it is, without any doubt, one of the ten best films of the decade.

I am not a big fan of prizes and awards, but (just in case you are one) it's worth mentioning this so that you know - Slumdog Millionaire won five Critics' Choice Award, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards, including Best film and has been nominated for ten Academy Awards.

OK. I know most of you might have watch it since it was screening for quite a while.
But if you happen to not watch it yet - go watch it now.

'It is a masterpiece that not only leaves you smiling but counting the days until you can see it again.'

I can't agree more.
