Whenever I listen to this song, I cannot help but cry.

10 Recent Addictions
Recently I have developed some 'weird' addictions. Don't ask me why and how I caught up with them - because I have absolutely no idea..-.-
1. I enjoy staying up alone at night, sometimes even until 6am in the morning. Do nothing but to listen to different songs and to indulge in my own thoughts. Weird but I find songs nicer to hear when it is quiet at night.
2. I love to shop after lectures and during weird times like 5pm when the shops are about to close (those are times with least customers). After a long, stressful day, nothing beats a good evening retail therapy. :)
3. I youtube A LOT. It's like the hottest link in my browser now. I watch random series from U.S, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan or even China (yes China..I have just finished Justice Pao recently keke). But most of all, I love the Taiwanese entertainment and variety shows. I used to perceive them as 'shallow'. But I was SO WRONG - the hosts are simply hilarious.
4. I constantly check my email, almost every half an hour. It's like one weird habit I cannot help but to do it again and again. Am I nuts? Pretty much.
5. It is a must for me to check out the kitchen section whenever I walk into a departmental store. I even collect catalogues from Lakeland (retain chains selling household items). I guess pots and pans really help when it comes to fantasies for a warm, cozy home.
6. I read fashion magazines before sleep. But the thing is I always fall asleep even before I finish one damn article. Don't ask me why.
7. I love clementines/mandarin oranges. And now it seems like I am having a permanent sorethroat.
8. I read scripts of series online. Yes, no motion pictures, no sound effects, just the scripts. I find it the easiest way to learn English, especially in terms of daily conversations. This is the best excuse I can come out with so far.
9. I shop online nowadays. Albums, books or fashion items - just a few clicks and it will be right in your pigeon hole after a week. I am now very close to buying my groceries online.
10. Finally I drink Kopi O at night. Hmm..maybe that explains the staying up late bit. And it has to be that very specific brand - NanYang Kopi O from white coffee beans. YUM.
I couldn't help but to wonder: is England this bad that I have to come up with these obsessions just to ease out the boredom??!

In my wildest dreams
1. I wish to publish a book.
Mainly photographs. About some unsung heroes in our lives.
They are not scientists who make great discoveries. They are not leaders of nations who tell people what to do. They are absolutely normal people, like you, like me; like a mother of four who raised her children well; like a grandfather who sacrificed his pension for kids' education fee; like a poor African child who managed to graduate from a local university.
Mainly because they accomplish the impossible in their lives. Even though the impossible, from many point of view, is not extraordinary. But to me, they are successful, in every way.
2. I wish to go for a very spontaneous trip.
Not knowing where am I going, not planning itinerary.
I think it would be fun to just go somewhere. No plans. No destination. It's like living life. You never know what will happen, where you will end up at. So why care so much about it? Experience every single moment. Make fun out of everything. Enjoy the process.
Because it really doesn't matter how many continents you have been to. Because travelling is never about 'conquering' the well-known destinations, or hitting some sort of target.
Just like life. It is not about achieving what people usually think you should achieve.
Go Paris - visit Eiffel Tower. Go New York - visit Statue of Liberty. Isn't that boring?
I remember most about the night when I stood at the balcony of the Empire State Building.
Not because of the silly, self-fulling thought of 'you see, I've been to New York'.
It's simply because I enjoy every single bit of it. The night view, the sky without stars and the cold wind.
To dream anything you want to dream. That is the beauty of human mind.
To do anything you want to do. That is the strength of human will.
To trust yourself and to test your limit. That is the courage to succeed.

Pure
On Valentine's Day, I asked Danny.
'Can you describe me in one word?'.
He thought for a while and came out with a rather surprising word 'pure'.
Yucks. OK. You all can stop vomitting now.
I know how people feel when someone starts to brag about herself being 'pure'.
But this is my blog - so who cares?
HAHAHA.
Bear with me. Just one more sentence.
His explained (I admit there is some paraphrasing here, but the general idea is there): 'Your love is pure and real. You get worried, you get mad, you care because you love. When you come to love, it's pure love.'
I have to say - I am impressed.
He actually knows me quite well. :p
Ok. Full stop.
The real story starts here.
He asked me, 'then what would you describe me in one word?'
After some thinking, I replied with a wide grin on my face.
'Pure.'
Hehe. I am serious k?
He is one person I know who has no bad intentions.
He has an amazing ability to never see the bad side in people.
I know him for three years and I never see him badmouth, or backstab, or deceive, or play dirty.
He never judge, never try to intrude the lives of others, never try to take the credits.
Never. Not even once.
He is just there, smiling, and be responsible for his own life.
His honesty is very funny when everytime he tries to lie, you can really tell.
And he never pretend, never try to put a mask on his face to be that someone else.
He just has that courage to reveal his true self in front of everybody.
Amazing isn't it?
He talks about his mistakes and his 'evil' plans (and it ceases to be evil when he openly talks about it).
He smiles and responds so naturally to everything.
I always call him 'mr. big kid'.
Because of his unstoppable curiosity in most things, even after many times of almost falling off the bike whenever he tries to do a stunt on it.
Because of his absolute confidence in being himself and his wonderful magic of rejecting pretense.
Mostly because of his innonence (sometimes it can be very 'noob' though, but what to do? :).
Pure innonence even after going through so many tough times in life.
Perhaps this is what got him through cancer.
- his untainted heart.
Pure. What a word. :)

Yes
I used to be that person who always say 'yes' to everything.
But it got tiring in the end because I said 'yes' ALL THE TIME, even if I didn't want to.
And it got worse when I wasn't sure of what I really want anymore.
Often, you realised too, that people tend to take advantage on your inability to say 'no'.
Then I pushed myself into that 'no' era.
I said 'no' to things I wasn't up to.
And then I said 'no' to things I wasn't sure of.
And then I said 'no' to most things in life.
It became a habit.
I stopped to get involved or to commit.
Maybe because I perceived most people as trying to get something out of me.
Maybe because after a lot of resting, I resorted to life without much responsibilities and it was pretty difficult to walk out of that comfort zone.
Maybe because I was not engaged in things for quite a while and I was not sure if I am enough for anything anymore.
Today, I watched the show 'Yes Man'.
Funny. I see myself in that show. But the opposite version of it.
It reminded me of something I long forgotten.
Yes. Say yes.
'Yes' embraces possibilities.
'Yes' opens up doors.
You never know what's waiting for you if you don't step in and try.
Yes, it might turn out to be a really bad thing, but you learn and you experience.
Yes, it might be something very different from what you expect, but what's wrong with surprises?
Yes, it might be tiring, but at the very least, you open up your eyes and stretch out your arms and taste what's in life.
Don't restrict yourself. Don't close up the doors. Don't cut your wings off if you want to fly.
Yes.
But the trick is say yes only if you want to.
Not too sure?
Try it out then.
:)
p.s. I recalled back all the 'yes-es' I said previously. Somehow they turned out to be something good. I remembered last year I said 'yes' to help out with Malaysian Night when I was so busy (and I really wanted to say 'no'). And guess what? This year when I couldn't get my tickets, I got them as a favour in return for my 'yes'.
Trust me. It does lead to something good.
It really depends on how you define 'good' though. :p
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaming 'wow! what a ride!'.
I used to write this in my personal statement.
I guess I had a short-term memory lost. hehe.
But gratefully, it's all coming back again.

Slumdog Millionaire
Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from a slum of Mumbai, is one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India's version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'
The question is 'How did Jamal do it?'
A. He cheated.
B. He was lucky.
C. He's a genius.
D. It is written.
The movie opens with this question.
***
'Slumdog Millionaire' by Danny Boyle is so far one of the best movies I've watched in my life.
Every once in a while, a seemingly ordinary film, with no famous cast and flying heroes, enters the theatre and takes the audiences by surprise.
'Slumdog Millionaire' makes me fall in love with movies all over again.
***
The plot is simply stunning.
It's about a story of a young man on India's version of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'. It starts off with the police interrogating him for cheating in the show.
But soon the inspector and the audiences realise that he knew the answers for a reason.
Like the opening question to the movie, the four things - knowledge, tricks, luck and fate - which one is the answer to all the things happened in life?
It is a love story. But also a revelation of oppression, prejudices and economic exploitation in India, a hardcore brotherhood movie and a life examination.
To top it all, it has a nail-biting storyline that 'climaxes' till the very end - will he win the 20 million rupees?
Find it hard to believe?
***
Let's see the reviews:
* It's a Dickensian picture about a world rarely, if ever, seen in mainstream movies, a film that grabs us from the opening frame and doesn't let go until the credits roll at the end.
* It is drama, comedy, musical, thriller, love story, and more in one transcending, riveting story. It is life on celluloid and, easily, one of the best movies of the year.
* What Boyle has done is truly miraculous. He has turned a film about street life in Bombay into a visceral, genuine crowd-pleaser. And you will walk out of the movie theater feeling inspired and hopeful, knowing you've just seen something very special.
* "Slumdog Millionaire" is not to be missed. It is the best movie of the year. And it is, without any doubt, one of the ten best films of the decade.
I am not a big fan of prizes and awards, but (just in case you are one) it's worth mentioning this so that you know - Slumdog Millionaire won five Critics' Choice Award, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards, including Best film and has been nominated for ten Academy Awards.
OK. I know most of you might have watch it since it was screening for quite a while.
But if you happen to not watch it yet - go watch it now.
'It is a masterpiece that not only leaves you smiling but counting the days until you can see it again.'
I can't agree more.

In a wheelchair
After negotiation skills workshop, I took a bus home.
Given the fact that it's 5.30pm in the evening, the bus was so full people can barely move.
The lady driver managed to pull over at the train station after making a big, difficult turn at the relatively small roundabout.
Great! The station! More people coming up. -.-
Looking away from the queue outside the bus (and quietly letting out a long sigh), I caught a glimpse of some slight movements among the standing crowd.
There was this girl in a wheelchair trying to get off the bus.
But the bus was so packed that the wheelchair could barely squeeze through.
The driver (being helpful but in a rather impolite manner) shouted with a low, rough voice - 'EVERYONE MOVE!'
After the surprisingly expected bellow, all the students, even the old ladies tried to push their bodies against the wall to spare her some space.
The driver then without further hesitation, grabbed a yellow board and laid it on to flatten off the gap between the bus and the pavement.
She moved those very inflexible wheels. She made a sharp U-turn.
But with a great deal of effort.
Anyway, she managed to get off the bus after 5 minutes without running over someone's feet.
Even those people who were desperately lining up to get up the bus just now made a few steps away from the door for her.
She then, with her head down and her hands on the wheels, headed towards the station.
It then struck me:
If I am the girl sitting on the wheelchair - looking at these people kindly offering their help....
should I be happy or sad?
I wonder.

Don't stand at my grave and cry
Came across this poem while watching Desperate Housewives, and am very impressed by the thoughts and words.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
If the day has come for me, I wish I could have such belief.
Given the world so beautiful, I hope to be here forever, be it in the form of wind or birds, snow or rain.
I simply hate to admit the fact that one day, everything, everything will just STOP, and your life ends FOREVER. Whatever you do, whoever you love, just stop like that. And the clock will never tick again.
Also mostly because I sincerely wish - with the thought that I never leave, those whom I love and those who love me, will not painfully cry.
I do not know if I can still feel anything after death, but what I am sure of is those who live have no way to run away from the fact that I am gone, forever.
So I guess, I am still not coping well with death.
Who copes well??
Think too much huh?
Yea yea, Qian is growing her white hair now.
To cheer things up a little, I think I shall show you this.
Partly to prove the truthfulness of my previous post, and mainly to satisfy Yihui's desire.

In return, Yihui - it's time to show your 'latest updates!'
Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. :p
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there
I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds
In circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there
I did not die
If the day has come for me, I wish I could have such belief.
Given the world so beautiful, I hope to be here forever, be it in the form of wind or birds, snow or rain.

Here you go: double-chinned Qian
(not enough?? you can perhaps scroll down a little to the paris post, there is one photo with danny and the waiter, and look at the size of my face!! -.- now you can laugh.. )

Pig
Is it the snow and cold weather? Or is it the relatively easy course?
I am eating and sleeping and eating and sleeping and...
Now I've landed myself in a shape very close to a 'pig'.

Then I came out with different excuses so that I can feel better:
1. Chinese New Year ma...
2. Cold ma...
3. It's good to have a little bit more 'bak' (meat in Hokkien), looks healthier a.k.a prettier..
4. I accummulate my fat now, so that I can thin down myself during exams, but not end up looking like a pale, sick person.
Aiyea whatever la.
Lyssa and Yihui must be laughing now...kekeke...'finally it's your turn'...
Great!
One more excuse: cheer up you both :)
Worth it worth it!

There is nothing wrong with falling down when you can stand up again
Soon you realise,
Those that do not kill you make you stronger.
Those that do not kill you make you stronger.

New Year Craze
I was randomly surfing blogs of my sisters, Yihui and my beloved juniors like Jun Shen and Livia.
And I have a realisation!! (ting ting)
The realisation is:
New year is all about getting together with your family!!
Alrighty, how inspiring it is -.-
But as you read the words of theirs mentioning about gatherings with family, trips to Genting and Cameron Highlands, so on and so forth, you realise one amazing thing :-
- despite the location and actions, being together with your family - those having direct or indirect blood ties with you - makes you feel homely and belonged.
To have someone related to you in the closest way, and the fact that this blood relationship is never going to change (of course leaving out emanicipation), instills in us the feeling of security and love.
That you are not one lonely soul wandering along the streets.
You have someone expecting for you at home, you have someone worrying about you, or even someone to get angry upon, you at the very least have SOMEONE.
So celebrate! We are very lucky...
What's more to feel sad about?

p.s. embracing the trend of my sisters putting family photos in their blog. call me copycat. :)

White Cambridge White Paris - I thought it's supposed to be spring?!
It had not been snowing this heavily in UK for years.
So Chien Fen organised a snowball fight outside Queens' College before our lectures.
The snow was amazingly beautiful.
People were amazingly crazy.
And our beloved Mr. Danny CHAN actually did some gay version winter sonata thingy with Hong Sheng.
I couldn't upload the video here.
But do visit my facebook to have a look at Danny's romantic act. (IT'S REALLY FUNNY)
I know this is a pictureless blog.
Many apologies for being such a BORING!! person for the past few months.
Here you go, let my pictures do the talking.
PARIS TRIP 2009 :)
Paris welcomed us with snow right after we touched down at the airport.
White Paris - romanticnya~~~
Of course not!! It's freezing cold ok?
Don't forget I am tropical breed. :P
This is LaFayette - the BRANDED mall.
Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabanna, Agnes B, Burberry, Elie Saab.......OMGGGG!! Calm down qian, calm down.

A local restaurant. I ate duck liver for appetizers, and then duck breast for main course, which practically made it a DD - Duck Day!
Title: Danny and his Chocolate Mousse.
Yes yes yes...he had his big bowl of mousse all by himself!!!!! Crazy isn't it?
This is the really funny waiter who did his signature wink all the time when we asked for something. He looks exactly like a cartoon character...ring any bells?? - RATATOUILLE!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, look at your right? left? oh no FRONT!
This is the famous musuem in Paris converted from a train station.
*yawn*
Punishment for lousy photo-taking skills - being a hunchback for one day :)
Yup that's the Notre Dame cathedral, with very romantic sidewalks next to it.
Birds flying, river flowing, church bells ringing, bushes topped with snow and old European buildings...
But too bad - camera ran out of batt --go and see it yourself la!
and hehe...a wall painting putting Libra (Danny's horoscope) and Scorpio (my horoscope) together.
Doubt you can see it clearly..
And yucks, I don't really wanna put up this photo.
But just so you can see how horrible a mummy looks like...eeww

Look at my oysters - YUM! And if you can notice, I couldn't wait but to swallow down one of the oysters before Danny snapped the pic.
Yes yes yes...he had his big bowl of mousse all by himself!!!!! Crazy isn't it?
LOUIS VUITTON!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!! Hallelujah hallelujah!!!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!! Hallelujah hallelujah!!!
Cruise along the river Seine.
Too cold to 'ice-bask' on the deck, so we hid underneath :)

Snow in Homerton
It's snowing in Cambridge today.
Danny and I went out to take some photos.
Don't know why, I am starting to miss Homerton already.
I guess three years are not enough for me.
Even though when I first came here, I complained a lot about the stress, the small minute room, the hall food.
But after years of staying here, I find it a very beautiful place now.
Time is an amazing thing, isn't it?
I start to miss the warm light shining through the windows of dining hall at night, the smiling old porters at the reception, the morning greetings of our cheerful cleaners Grace and Cheryl, the always-so-full bicycle racks, and the corridor mates making coffee in the kitchen, this is a beautiful place, really.
On the way back, we met an angmo randomly.
Danny jokingly said 'Merry Christmas' despite it being the 1st of February.
The angmo replied with a smile 'it's about time'.
Friendly, casual, easy-going is what I like about being overseas.

I'm alive
Danny and I were watching this japanese series based on a true story - 'One Litre of Tears'.
It's about a diary written by this girl with an incurable brain disease, Ikeuchi Aya.
It was a cruel sickness as the dying brain not only was taking away her ability to walk, to move, to speak, to swallow, to write, to read; it also progressed very slowly and left her conscious throughout.
When she soon realised her inability to do anything anymore, the only reason for her to live on was to continue writing her diary.
This diary was published after her death and has inspired lots of people for generations.
It was later converted into a movie and a series.
Quotes from 'One Litre of Tears':
'I really don't want to say things such as "I want to go back to how things were before". I recognise how I am right now, and I will continue to live on.'
'Reality is too cruel, too brutal. I don't even have the right to dream. As I think about the future, the tears will come out again.'
'Even though I have been hurt before by those heartless glares, this also helped me to understand that around me, there still exists some gentle glares. Therefore, I definitely won't run away. That's what I'll do. Definitely. Always.'
'When my existence seems to disappear
I will look for the place where I can do the best I can
From now on
I won't be impatient
I won't be greedy
I won't give up
Because everyone takes things step by step.'
'If you look up at the sky after falling down, the blue sky is also today stretching limitlessly and smiles at me...I'm alive.'
At first I resisted to watch even after Danny told me how good it is, because I was really afraid of crying out one litre of tears while watching it.
But after watching it, I realised those tears come with hope and warmth. It's worth shedding them for her.
Like what she said, 'To be able to smile and tell everyone this; i have, at least, cried one litre of tears. '
No matter how difficult things will be, they no longer matter anymore.
Because I'm alive.
I am alive.
